What Are Charas and How Are They Made

March 10, 2025

One of the oldest forms of cannabis concentrates originated in India and parts of Nepal. Some of you may not realize that India actually has been known for growing a lot of weed historically. It’s long been part of their culture in certain areas and their homemade cannabis concentrates that they make from their homegrow, is known as charas. Unlike other types of hash, you make charas through a very hands-on process where the resin from living cannabis plants is collected and rolled by hand(get it lol). But what exactly are charas?

What are Charas?

Charas is a hand-made cannabis concentrate, distinct from traditional hashish. Unlike hashish, which you make from dried plant material, charas is crafted when you gently rub live cannabis plants to extract resin, making it one of the most unique forms of hash. The process produces a potent, aromatic concentrate enjoyed for its rich flavor and effects.

The history of charas dates back centuries in the South East Asia, particularly in regions like India and Nepal. Learn more about the history of cannabis in India here. Charas holds deep cultural significance, often associated with religious ceremonies and spiritual practices, especially within Hindu traditions. Its importance continues to this day, maintaining a key role in the rituals and everyday life of local communities. Understanding the history of charas offers insight into its enduring cultural legacy.

How are Charas Made?

When making Charas, it all starts with harvesting fresh cannabis plants, typically from areas with the right climate, like the mountains of India, but don’t let that stop you from trying. The plants have to be close to done flowering, like its almost ready to harvest and dry or is ready.

The Chara Making Process

The process is pretty hands-on: you’ll gently rub the live cannabis buds with your hands. As you do this, the resin sticks to your fingers, and that’s what you’re after – the sticky resin is the core of charas. Once you’ve collected enough, you roll it into small, smooth balls or sticks. Afterward, you let it dry out a bit, then store it carefully to preserve its potency and flavor.

It’s a simple process, but it relies on the right environment. The weather, elevation, and soil all play a huge role in this cannabis extract. The particular area of the world that are famous for charas grows extremely resinous plants. That’s how you make them, thanks to a perfect blend of nature and technique!

How are Charas used?

Charas has long been celebrated not only for its medicinal benefits but also for its spiritual significance. With the long history it has you would expect no less.

Religious Use of Charas

Charas have been used for centuries in various religious ceremonies, including within Hinduism and other spiritual practices. It is often used during meditation and rituals, believing that it enhances spiritual connection and helps achieve a higher state of consciousness. The calming effects of the concentrate are thought to help achieve a deeper meditation, allowing you to reach a sense of inner peace and relaxation.

Medicinal Uses of Charas

From a medicinal perspective, charas has been valued for its therapeutic properties for both physical ailments and mental well-being. In Ayurvedic medicine, it has been used to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and help with various ailments like headaches, muscle cramps, and digestive issues. In modern times, people use it for its potential to manage anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Many people use it to relieve chronic pain or to find a natural alternative to pharmaceutical treatments. Pain and insomnia are both reasons that I use cannabis so this makes total sense to me.

The unique blend of cannabinoids in charas, particularly CBD and THC but also the lesser cannabinoids, contribute to its ability to ease tension and promote relaxation. This concentrate remains deeply rooted in cultural and healing traditions, offering benefits that continue to be appreciated in today’s world.

None of the above is medical advice, consult your doctor before using for medical symptoms. I say that to say, I don’t want to get into any trouble if you choose to smoke charas or any other cannabis reading my blog.
